Barefoot Barn Nature School adopts a Waldorf-inspired approach to learning, prioritizing the holistic development of each child. We firmly believe that by addressing the needs of the whole child, including their intellectual, emotional, and creative facets, we can foster confidence and set the stage for greater success in both education and life.
To facilitate this comprehensive approach to learning, we have chosen "The Good and Beautiful" curriculum for English and Math instruction. This carefully guided curriculum provides a solid foundation while allowing flexibility for individualized learning journeys. At Barefoot Barn, there are no rigid constraints or timeframes imposed on our students. Instead, each child is afforded the time they need to fully grasp and master new skills.
By combining our trusted curriculum with hands-on learning experiences and ample time spent outdoors, we create an enriching environment where children not only learn but also develop a genuine passion for learning. This approach empowers our students to embrace education wholeheartedly and thrive in their own unique ways.
Janet Kilburn Phillips once said, "Why try to explain miracles to your children when you can have them plant a garden?" At Barefoot Barn, we wholeheartedly embrace this sentiment, recognizing that teaching children to garden is one of the most valuable lessons we can impart.
With 24 garden beds nestled within our school grounds, your children will embark on a journey of discovery, learning about self-sustainability, nutrition, and the virtue of patience. By actively participating in the cultivation of their own fruits and vegetables, our students gain a profound understanding of where their food originates, fostering a newfound appreciation for wholesome, nourishing foods.
Maintaining a garden not only nourishes the body but also nurtures the mind and spirit. A thriving garden serves as a living classroom, offering insights into various disciplines such as composting, soil chemistry, pollination, and the intricate growth cycles of plants. Through hands-on experience in tending to their garden beds, children develop a deeper connection to the natural world while acquiring a wealth of knowledge that extends far beyond the classroom walls.
Barefoot Barn is home to a delightful array of animals, from our beloved class tortoise Zoey to the friendly Tina the pig. Our young learners play an integral role in caring for these animals, not only by showering them with love but also by providing daily care and attention.
We firmly believe that the presence of animals enriches the educational experience and fosters valuable qualities such as responsibility, compassion, and companionship in children. Interacting with animals offers our students a hands-on learning experience that is both immersive and unforgettable.
Witnessing the life cycles of animals firsthand provides a unique educational opportunity that cannot be replicated in textbooks alone. From observing the miracle of birth to understanding the interconnectedness of ecosystems, our students gain a profound appreciation for the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it.
